About Us

St. John’s Lutheran Church of Bridgewater was founded in 1854 by Rev. Frederich Schmidt.  It continues to serve the local community to this day.  Global outreach and support of global organizations is a commitment for St. John’s as well.  At St. John’s we have adopted statements that guide us in our mission for Christ.  These Mission, Vision, Values, and Beliefs Statements, are, along with the people of St. John’s, the core of our church.

Mission Statement: “Dedicating ourselves to God through prayer, study, service, and fellowship.”

Vision: A family of people moving closer to Jesus Christ and to each other.

Values: Family, Relationship with God, The historic Christian Witness, Service, Friendship, Generosity, Peace making, “Walking the Walk”

What we Believe:

  • We affirm the historic Christian proclamation.  Christ has died.  Christ is risen.  Christ will come again.
  • As adherents to the Lutheran expression of the Christian faith, we affirm the insight of Lutheranism that we are the justified before God (i.e. in a right relationship with Him, redeemed from sin) by grace (i.e. by God’s actions on our behalf through Jesus Christ) through faith (i.e. believing the promises of God).  We receive justification purely by God’s good will and not by our own works.
  • We believe in the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic faith, as expressed in the Bible (the source and norm of Christian faith and life), the ecumenical creeds and the Lutheran confessional documents.
  • We believe that Christ is made present to us in the Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion which are the gifts of God for the people of God.
  • We believe that a Christian life is lived out in service to God’s people.
  • We believe that the centerpiece of practical Christian living is the Great Commandment (love God and love neighbor), Matthew 22:37 and the Great Commission (make disciples of all nations), Matthew 28:19.

We are located at 8805 Austin Rd. in rural Bridgewater Township.  We are a people and service oriented church.  Visitors are always welcome at St. John’s so be sure to check our calendar of events and join us for fellowship in service for Jesus!

God Bless!
